My Favorite Chana Dal Recipe
I love starting my day with a hearty portion of lentils. One of my favorite recipes is Chana Dal, a nutritious and delicious Indian dish. It's simple to make, yet bursting with flavor. Here's my step-by-step guide:
Ingredients
1 cup Danfe’s Chana Dal 1/2 cup Danfe’s Sooji Flour 1/2 cup Spinach, finely chopped 1/2 cup Carrot, grated 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped 4-6 Curry Leaves, roughly chopped 1 tsp Ginger, grated 1-2 Green Chilies, chopped Fruit Salt to taste 1 tbsp Curd/Plain Yoghurt 1 tsp Olive Oil or any vegetable oilProcedure
Soak the chana dal overnight to ensure it softens and is easier to cook.
Drain the excess water and grind the chana dal to a coarse paste. Add a little water if needed.
In a mixing bowl, add the remaining ingredients (except fruit salt) and mix well.
Add the chana dal mix and mix thoroughly to combine.
Before serving, adjust the seasoning with a bit of fruit salt and mix well.
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat.
Once the skillet is warm, add the batter and cook until the first side turns golden brown.
Flip and cook the other side until it's also golden brown. If needed, drizzle a little oil over the top.
Repeat the steps until all the batter is cooked.
Serve your delicious Chana Dal hot, with your favorite chutneys.
I often serve this dish with a side of spicy chutneys to enhance the flavors. It makes a fantastic breakfast or a light and healthy meal any time of the day.
Two of My Favorite Lentil Dishes
My love for lentils isn't limited to just one dish; there are a couple of recipes that I hold very dear. Let's dive into these two favorites:
Mujadara
Mujadara is a delicious lentil dish that's been popular in the Middle East for generations. It consists of lentils and caramelized onions, and it's traditionally served on a bed of rice. However, I like to enjoy it on its own, catering to my taste preferences.
Lebanese Lentils Rice and Caramelized Onions Mujadara
To make Mujadara, start by cooking the lentils and caramelizing the onions until they're golden and sweet. Here's a simple preparation:
Cook the lentils until they're tender. Cook onions on a low heat until they become soft and caramelized. Combine the cooked lentils and caramelized onions in a pot, and serve hot. This dish is incredibly satisfying and can be enjoyed with or without rice. It's perfect for a hearty meal that's easy on the palate.
Daal Panak or Spinach Dal
Daal Panak, also known as Spinach Dal, is another favorite of mine. It's essentially cooked lentils flavored with a creamy blend of spinach. Think of it as a spinach-laden lentil soup that's both comforting and flavorful.
Spinach Dal Flavor From Scratch
For this recipe, you can start by sautéing some onions and ginger to release their flavors. Then, add the lentils and cover them with water. Let them simmer until tender. Finally, blend in some fresh spinach to create a creamy, delicious texture.
Serve this dish hot, either as a main course on its own or as a dip for naan bread. It's a wholesome and satisfying meal that's perfect for chilly evenings.
A Creator's Perspective
If you're inspired to try something new, I encourage you to experiment with different spices and ingredients. While these recipes serve as a good starting point, don't be afraid to adapt them to your taste. Each ingredient serves a purpose, but the end result is a reflection of your culinary creativity.
Conclusion
Whether you're a seasoned cook or a beginner in the kitchen, lentils offer a wide range of delicious possibilities. From the satisfying Chana Dal to the comforting Mujadara and Daal Panak, these dishes are not only nutritious but also incredibly flavorful. Give them a try, and you might discover a new favorite meal.
